O DONOGHUE CUP
Commiserations to our Senior Men who exited the O Donoghue Cup at the first round stage against Gneeveguilla. Despite holding a five point lead in the second half they were reeled in by a very competitive Sliabh Luachra side , who finished the stronger to win by the minimum, 1-15 to 1-14. And while defeat is disappointing, when one looks at the year as a whole, finishing in the top half of the County League Division 1 and being Intermediate semi finalists shows that the team was there or thereabouts. Of course East Kerry is the most competitive Divisional championship with three senior clubs and a host of Intermediate clubs so any win is always hard earned. We thank Nigel Shevlin and his management team for their effort , work and commitment all season.
U14 LADIES
Our U14 girls took to the field for their East Kerry Division 2 Shield Final, with the home side Spa being their opponents. From the throw-in, it was clear both sides were evenly matched in pace, skill, and determination. Legion hit the ground running, settling into the rhythm of the game with composed play which led to some well-worked early scores. Spa got on the scoreboard after 12 minutes and began to chip away at our lead. Despite the pressure, Legion held firm, entering the break with a narrow advantage of 2-5 to 2-2. Legion started the second half strongly, dominating possession and notching some beautiful early points. However, Spa responded by increasing their intensity. They capitalised on a few moments of loose play, turning over possession and creating dangerous chances in front of goal. The game became a thrilling end-to-end battle, with goals coming thick and fast from both sides. Every time Spa found the net, Legion responded in kind, showing great composure under pressure.
Midway through the second half, a scramble on our goal line resulted in a penalty for Spa, which they coolly slotted home to swing momentum in their favour once again. But our girls met each challenge with grit and determination. A brief pause in play due to an injury to a Legion player gave both teams a moment to regroup. When play resumed, our girls dug deep, showing incredible heart to see out the game. In the end, it was our sharp shooting and hard-earned points that made the difference, edging out a dramatic win on the night.
Final Score: Legion 6-9 to Spa 7-4.
Thank you to Spa for a very competitive game and to the referee for officiating excellently throughout. A special thanks to our dedicated supporters on the sideline. As our U14 campaign comes to a close, we look back with pride and forward with great excitement. This team has shown tremendous progress, and the future is certainly bright for Legion girls football!
CLUB REPRESENTATIVES
Well done to Evelyn Grimes, Clodagh Hegarty, Jaylinn O Leary, Emma Moynihan, Mia Cox and Reagan O Shea who were all part of the East Kerry U13 panel that played in the District Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile Sophie O'Shea and Leah Mannix both received their medals for representing Kerry at the LGFA Juvenile Awards in Tralee last night. Sophie collected her U16 Munster and All Ireland A medals. A tremendous achievement given Sophie still has another year at this age next year. Leah received her U14 Munster B medal. Leah is also eligible for this age group next year. The club is extremely proud of the achievements of Sophie and Leah and we look forward to them continuing to represent Killarney Legion and Kerry into the future.
MINOR BOYS
Our minor boys advanced to the end of year East Kerry minor final courtesy of a win over Rathmore in an exciting and open game in Direen this afternoon. The visitors scored the opening point but goals from Aindi Ó Cathasaigh, Bryan Walsh and Kevin Looney gave the home a foothold in the first half , helping them into a 3-4 to 0-10 lead. Despite a few squandered chances in the second half and Rathmore fighting their back with a goal of their own , the lead was preserved , thanks in the main to two great saves from James Murphy. We look forward to a final in two weeks to round off a great year for our Minors. The East Kerry Minor final will be played against Dr. Crokes and is scheduled for November 1st. Thanks to ref Padraig OSullivan and to Rathmore players management amd supporters for a sporting game.
